What
is
Science Kids?
Science Kids is a field-based program designed to get kids outside, where great learning happens. This is our second year of offering summer classes in Sheridan County. Students explore and learn about the ecosystems they are a part of, through hands-on activities. Classes are split into age groups: 6-8 and 9-11
What are the Science Kids class times?
Most
classes are from 8:30 – 1:30, Mon-Thur.
How much does a Science Kids class cost?
Per week class, 8:30am-1:30, Mon-Thur., costs $105, Mon-Wed. costs $85. Other programs vary in cost. Tuition breaks down to $5.25 an hour for quality outdoor science education, with experienced, enthusiastic staff.
Do you have insurance?
We have insurance for the program itself, our instructors, an auto insurance policy on the bus, and insurance on each driver.
Can I register by mail or by phone?
Yes, you can, but the preferred method is to use the online registration process. Your registration is then processed right away and a confirmation is instantly e-mailed to you.
When is payment due?
Payment is due within fourteen days of registration. If payment is not received within 14 days, your child’s spot will not be held, unless other arrangements have been made.
How will you communicate with parents/guardians?
We will be using e-mail reminders with all the details the week before your child’s class starts. We will also send a schedule of daily activities and locations along with the teacher’s phone number and e-mail address, in case there are any questions.
Do you provide transportation?
Yes, we have a fifteen passenger school bus. Our vehicle and drivers are properly licensened and insured.
What is the class student/teacher ratio?
Science Kids’ student/teacher ratio is no more than 6:1- One teacher and one teaching assistant per class. Often a teen TA will be helping as well, bringing the ratio down to 4:1. The maximum number of students is 12 for classes. (Minimum 5 students for a class to run.)
Who are the teachers?
All teachers have completed background checks and fingerprints through the State of Wyoming. All are trained in First Aid, CPR, Universal Precautions, and Medication Administration. All are over the age of 25, most are elementary or middle school teachers, but all have one year minimum outdoor environmental education experience with children. You can read more about some of our staff
here
.
Where do classes meet in the morning?
Students meet the teacher and load onto the bus each morning at the Sheridan County Fulmer Public Library unless otherwise specified.
Where do the classes go?
Our main site is the Bradford Brinton Memorial and Museum. Other sites include private ranch lands & public lands throughout Sheridan County.
Are you a licensed child care provider, and what does this mean?
No, the state of Wyoming does not require summer camps to be licensed. Yet we insist our instructors be fingerprinted and have background checks.
What do the kids need to bring to a class?
A large, full bottle of water, a healthy snack and lunch, waterproof raingear, or hiking shoes or other closed-toe shoes, brimmed hat, a sweatshirt or fleece, sunscreen, and insect repellent. Please, no electronic games/toys/gadgets, wallets or money.
Are classes full?
Classes begin filling up in March. Register as soon as possible to ensure your child and friends get a spot in their preferred classes. If a class is full, your child wil be placed on the waiting list for the class. You will not be charged to be on this list and will be notified immediately if a spot opens in the class. If we find a spot for a waitlisted child, payment in full will be due within seven days.
My child will be 6 years old come summer – can my child attend a class for 6-8 yr olds?
Yes, but we highly recommend that they have completed kindergarten and are comfortable riding a school bus, understand group dynamics, and know they will be around, or in, a class with older kids.
My child has special needs – can you accommodate us?
We will happily accommodate your child in any way we can. We will need to discuss each on a case-by case basis to ensure the safety of your child.
My child has allergies and asthma but he never needs to use medicine – can I pack some Sudafed and inhaler in his backpack? Do I still need to fill out your medical forms?
All medication requires medical forms to be completed and signed by the child’s physician. Medicine should never be placed in a child’s backpack and the Instructor must know about any medication the child may need. Any medicine must be labeled from the Health Care Provider. We are not allowed to give medicine without having written instructions and a properly labeled bottle. Medication administered during Science Kids class must be logged. Please speak with the director, Sarah Mentock about medication arrangements at 307.763.0976.
Do you offer scholarships?
Not at this time, but as the program grows, we are committed to providing scholarships for families in need.
